They're already on the endangered species list. WE won't have public mail boxes hanging out on the street corners much longer.
Then, to add insult to injury, some bozo-nosed boneheads have to violate them.

I walked across the mall to deposit some bills in the mailbox that was just outside the food court. It was gone GONE!! I was sad. So very sad.

I agree, definitely becoming a thing of the past. I hate when I see things that have been a mainstay my whole life fade away, it's sad.
