From the interior front cover:
"This is the first issue of a new magazine designed solely for the entertainment and amusement of the reader. We have no lofty plans to better the world; no Quixotic ideals about righting wrongs or airing grievances. That we intend to leave to the many publications already in the field of educating and enlightening society.
"Our sole purpose - in this age of alarms, tensions, cold wars, hot nerves and neuroses - will be to afford the reader a pleasant interlude. If we can bestir a chuckle or an hour spent in relaxation and entertainment, we will feel that our job has been well done. To this end, therefore, we dedicate ourselves to the constant pursuit of what is pleasuring to the eye and delectable to the artistic taste of that section of the public gown weary of gory headlines.
"If we must be accused of leaning in any direction, let it be towards the Rabelaisian rather than getting the facts straight, ma'm' ..."
